Do I Actually Need Two Hearing Aids?

Man able to enjoy lively party because he's using two hearing aids instead of one.

For most people both ears don’t normally have the same exact degree of hearing loss. Because one ear normally has worse hearing loss than the other, it raises the question: Do I truly need a pair of hearing aids, or can I simply deal with the ear with more significant hearing loss?

One hearing aid, in most situations, will not be better than two. But a single hearing aid might be more appropriate in some less common situations.

There’s a Reason Why You Have A Pair of Ears

Whether you know it or not, your ears efficiently work as a pair. That means using two hearing aids has certain advantages over wearing one.

  • Being Able to Localize Correctly: Your brain is always working, not only to understand sounds but also to place them in order to determine where they’re coming from. This is a lot easier when your brain can triangulate, and in order to do that, it needs solid inputs from both ears. When you’re only able to hear well from one ear, it’s a lot harder to figure out where a sound is coming from (which may be indispensable if you happen to live near a busy street, for instance).
  • Tuning in on Conversations: The whole point of using a hearing aid is to help your hearing. Other people conversing is something you will certainly want to hear. Wearing two hearing aids allows your brain to better filter out background noises. Because your mind has more available data your brain can determine what is closer and consequently more likely to be something you want to focus on.
  • Make The Health of Your Ears Better: In the same way as seldom used muscles can atrophy, so can an unused sense. Your hearing can start to go downhill if your ears don’t receive regular sound input. Get the organs of your ears the input they need to maintain your hearing by wearing two hearing aids. If you already have tinnitus, using two hearing aids can minimize it and also improve your ability to discern sounds.
  • Modern Hearing Aids Work as a Set: Just as your ears work together normally, more modern hearing aid technology is designed to function as a pair. The artificial intelligence and sophisticated features work well because the two pieces communicate with each other and, much like your brain, identify which sounds to focus on and amplify.

Is One Hearing Practical in Some Scenarios?

Using two hearing aids is the better choice in most cases. But the question is raised: If somebody is wearing a hearing aid in just one ear, why?

Well, usually there are two reasons:

  • Financial concerns: Some people think that they can spend less money if they can use only one hearing aid. Purchasing one hearing aid is better then not getting any at all if you can’t really afford a pair. However, you should understand that eventually untreated hearing loss has been verified to raise your overall healthcare costs. Your healthcare costs have been shown to increase by 26 percent after only two years of neglected hearing loss. So talk to your hearing expert to make sure only getting one hearing aid is a good idea for you. We can also help you brainstorm ways to make hearing aids more budget friendly.
  • You still have perfect hearing in one ear: If only one of your ears requires a hearing aid, then you may be best served by having a hearing aid in just one ear but it’s definitely something you should talk to your hearing professional about (having one better ear is not the same thing as having one perfect ear).

One Hearing Aid is Not as Beneficial as Two

Two hearing aids, however, will be better than one for your ears and hearing in the vast majority of circumstances. There are simply too many advantages to having good hearing in both ears to disregard. In most cases, just as having two ears is better than having one, having two hearing aids is definitely better than having only one.
